HARD DRIVE HISTORY - 50 YEARS IN THE MAKING
September 13th marks the 50th anniversary of hard drive storage. When IBM delivered its first hard drive on September 13, 1956, few could have imagined the impact it would have on our everyday lives. The RAMAC (also known as ‘Random Access Method of Accounting and Control’) was the size of two refrigerators and literally weighed a ton. It required a separate air compressor to protect the heads, had pizza-sized platters and was able to store a then whopping 5 megabytes of data. Now you can do all that with a pocket drive! What’s more - the RAMAC was available to lease for $35,000 USD, the equivalent of $254,275 in today’s dollars.

CUSTOMERS SAY IT BEST
It is important to consult a professional as soon as a data loss is discovered. Failed recovery attempts could cause additional damage making data unrecoverable. Norma at Universal Music Group did just that:
Our in-house IT department could not get the crashed drive to read and had no other recourse but to send it in to the professionals at Ontrack. Great job Ontrack, and we love the customer service!
